There is a real dichotomy with SEO and backlinks.

I read on another article here that Google don't like sites that have bought links - link farms or the like.

But the problem is, they work!

There is a vested interest for Google in new sites not ranking well, because they inevitably spend money advertising on Google AdWords to try to increase their traffic. This monopoly can't be good for this industry.

Thank you for this post, which I am going to come back to.

This week, I have been developing a new blog and became very aware of the presence of the title tag vs the use of meta tags.

I had a conversation with my son today, about the importance of the use of tags in posts for increased SEO. It all sounds so basic and commonplace for those of us a little farther on the learning curve.

Your blog provides great information for us, and certainly a training ground for smart beginners.

I wholeheartedly agree that the position of the keywords in the page title plays a significant role in the search engine rankings. I also think that it ends up being a challenge to create an SEO friendly title while still making it coherent to the visitor. I've always suspected that the people who just stuff keywords into the title without any coherence may rank OK, but will have a lower click-thru as the page title isn't people friendly.

Onsite optimization is definitely something we can do very quickly compared to offsite optimization so there is no excuse not to. I know putting your main keywords found in your website and meta keywords in your title is important. But sometimes it can be a little difficult without sounding a bit funny to your readers. So at times you may have to think a little less about SEO and a little more about your reader. When that happens I try to put them the keywords in the first paragraph of my blog post.

Image map link is one of the thing that a Search Engine is unable to follow from the home page to inside the pages. But an inside page is more relevant and descriptive than a home page. This is the reason that an HTML tag should be added to home page that lead to major inside pages of the Website. A site map page with text links will help search engines to locate pages within your Website.

@Morinda, I agree. If you're using wordpress, the plugin to use is 'all in one seo'. It allows you to customise meta descriptions on a per post basis, along with page titles and meta keywords ( for all the good that they are).

I think Tim above had a great point about limiting your words and characters in your title. Not sure how that plays with Google but I've seen a nice increase in rankings since I've started doing that.

I've found recently that Google's gotten WORSE at creating a search engine result description if you don't include a meta description on the page. For example, it listed countries from a currency dropdown menu I had. So I'm advertising jewellery, yet my search engine result description just listed countries! So lesson learned - always write your own meta description yourself in the HTML. Don't let the search engine pick a "suitable" description for you (lol - as if they can).

Ranking is one thing, getting people to click on your link in Google is another - and the TITLE and META description help sell the link. Keep it concise and avoid ridiculous hyperbole. It's an idea if you're selling items to include the price in the metadescription or even the title - even if it's a rough guide like " - From $XX.00). . If it's a category listing page - appending the title with " - From $XX" is a good way to let the searcher know the kind of price range these items sell for on your site (people don't want to waste time so the more info you can provide the more likely they are to click).

You only get 65-66 characters for your tag so USE THEM WISELY.

Thisnk of it as a sign.

Do NOT use the following:

the, and, and more, |, ?, ..., of it, by, incredible, best, ***, etc.

They are a waste of space for the SERPS will ignore those characters and you probably could have replace that space with a keyword to boost your rank.

Now if you are an informational heavily branded site, forget what I just said. For example:

"The Harvard Review" --> enough said there.

Please send $15.00 to my retirement fund for this invaluable information. My street address is on my contact page.
